J-E Tough In Tough Race

Jamesville, N.Y. - If tough is what the Jordan-Elbridge Boys Cross Country team was looking for, they found it at the Chittenango Invitational on Saturday.  The Eagles competed in what clearly was the toughest race of the day, a veritable who's who of Section III stalwarts.  Jordan-Elbridge held their own by finishing 6th out of 18 schools and once again defeated Tully H.S.  The race was won by nationally ranked F-M H.S. who tallied the low score of 47 points.  F-M's Alex Katz was the race winner as well finishing the 5 K course in 15.50.

For J-E, Cody Stanton once again was the Eagles' number one man, breaking 17 minutes on the course that will be used for Sectionals on the last day of October.  Stanton finished in 11th place in an outstanding time of 16.55.  Just behind Stanton was fellow junior teammate Mike Marrero was was 17th in 17.05.  Last week at VVS, Stanton was one minute and 5 seconds ahead of Marrero.  On Saturday, Stanton was only 10 seconds ahead.  "I think Mike raced a lot better today than last week" said J-E Coach Roger Roman, "he was really slowed by a bloody heel which has since healed".

Greg Bader ws J-E's 3rd man once again finishing in 38th place (18.07).  "Greg took over a minute off of his time from last year at this meet in September of 2007" said Roman, "we have to remember that he's only in his second year of cross country".

Tom Poppe and Steve Slonosky rounded out the scoring for the Eagles by finishing in 48th and 55th places respectively.  Poppe's time was 18.35 and Slonosky's was 18.51.  Any chances of a post season team birth will go through J-E's 4th and 5th runners.  This was the first varsity race that Slonosky has ever scored.

Kyle Becker and Derrick Cheney were the Eagle's 6th and 7th runners turning in sub par times (Becker ran 19.42 and Cheney completed the course in 21.35).

Mitch Alpha led the Junior Varsity squad to a 6th place team finish by finishing 30th overall.  There were 228 runners who competed in the JV race.  Alpha's time was 19.22, ahead of varsity teammates Kyle Becker and Derrick Cheney.  Actually, the top three JV runners' times were fast enough to place ahead of varsity teammates.  Carlin Coomey was 33rd in 19.36 and Tom Badman was 35th in 19.38.  Scott Sullivan and John Flynn rounded out the scoring for the Eagles by finishing 38th and 41st respectively (20.02 and 20.11).  Out of the scoring 'five' of the JV squad, only Carlin Coomey has had even one year of experience at the varsity distance of 5 K.

J-E Junior Varsity Dominates

Baldwinsville, N.Y. - The crowd murmured.  Coaches were amazed.  Race officials scratched their heads.  How could a team dominate a race like what was seen on Saturday?  As unlikely as it seems, the Jordan-Elbridge Junior Varsity squad placed five runners in the top ten of the JV race at the Baldwinsville Invitational this past Saturday and simply blew away the competition.  Jordan-Elbridge's team score was a mere 35 points.  The next closest squad was Holland Patent with 75 points, more than double of J-E's score.

J-E got out smart when the race began and did not worry about leading the large pack until after the race entered the wooded trails that make B'ville's cross country course so fun to run.  When J-E exited the woods at about 1.5 miles into the race, a group of five J-E runners were bunched together.  "We really have to thank Tom Badman as he got us out quickly and all we had to do with follow Tom" said J-E senior John Flynn.  For the next 1.5 miles, the J-E pack ran together, getting the attention of the large crowd that had assembled to watch the race.  "It was so cool to watch and listen to the crowd" said J-E Coach Roman, "everyone was saying things about J-E, and how amazing it was to see five runners running together as the squad was doing".  "Truly a amazing site to see".  "What is even more amazing is that not one of these guys was running cross country last year, and to dominate this way shows how great of athletes and runners they are" said Roman.  "Their futures are very very bright".

J-E sophomore Derrick Cheney began the J-E onslaught by placing fourth in the race in 18.15.  Right behind Derrick was freshman Mitch Alpha in 6th (18.24), senior John Flynn was 7th (18.31), sophomore Scott Sullivan was 8th in 18.37, and fellow sophomore Tom Badman was 10th in 18.41.  "It would have been cool if all five could have stayed together and finished together, but they had to break up to avoid getting passed by other runners" said Roman.  Not far behind the lead pack was J-E junior Kyle Alpha (24th/19.30), senior Brendan Hogan (27th/19.39), senior George Brauchle (35th/19.59), junior Dylan Kirk (37th/20.06), freshman Rob Patterson (38th/20.07), and freshman Jesse Dexter (69th/22.27).

J-E Varsity Takes 4th

Led by Cody Stanton's 2nd place finish, the J-E Varsity squad battled three state ranked teams but fell to 4th place overall in the Boys Varsity C/D race.  The race was won by the number one state ranked Class D squad Beaver River with a low score of 77 points.  Class C rivals Tully and Holland Patent were just in front of the Eagles with 82 and 90 points respectively.  J-E totalled 111 points.

Stanton, the J-E standout junior, led for the majority of the race but was overcome by Tully 's Ohure Sam down the closing 800 meters of the race.  Sam was another of the standout cross country runners running for Tully H.S. and one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan.  Both runners congratulated each other for a great race in the finish chute following the race.  Stanton ran a personal best time of 15.55 and was outwardly please with his race.  "I felt great and I really thought I was going to win" said Stanton, "but he passed me after the wall and I couldn't catch him".  Sam finished the 3.0 mile course in 15.50.

Junior Mike Marrero was 7th overall in 16.22 which was also a personal record for him.  "Except for a little sore throat I felt good" said Marrero.  Greg Bader was next for J-E in 21st place in 17.06 overall.  The 44 second gap between him and Marrero was the closest the two teammates have been in 2008.  "I'm getting there" said Bader, "I felt better than the last two races".  "All I need now is to get some more chutzpah to overcome that one part of my race where I give into the pain".  "I can be tougher".

Junior Tom Poppe was J-E's 4th man in 39th place (17.42), just two seconds ahead of freshman teammate Steve Slonosky (42nd/17.44).  "I just didn't have a very good race" said Poppe.  Senior Kyle Becker flashed a fantastic 'kick' down the closing stretch to almost catch both Poppe and Slonosky, finishing 46th (17.55).  "I almost got by Tully's Omot Okor but he got me by a half a stride" said Becker.  This was the first time that Becker had ever broken 18 minutes in a cross country race.  Sophomore Carlin Coomey, who was running in his first varsity invitational race was 60th (18.27).  "I told Carlin that just making the 'varsity 7' is an achievement and he should be proud of this" said Roman.

Boom Boom, Out Went the Lights

Rochester, N.Y. - Talk about a 180, a turn about, an about face.  The J-E Cross Country squad entered the 44th annual McQuaid Invitational to show that last Saturday's debacle at the Baldwinsville Invite was an aberration and that they were legitimate contenders to win the Section III the Class C crown.  What occurred was 47 point rebound, and some new found respect.  The Eagles took a respectable 6th place in the seeded small school race, only one point out of 5th place.  The Eagles trailed only East Aurora, N.Y. State's # 3 class B squad, three Pennsylvania schools that left their region to race in the nation's second largest invitational, and Newark Valley, N.Y. State's number one class C squad.   The Eagles defeated Gowanda H.S. in the seeded or 'ranked' class C/D race and Gowanda held the # 3 spot in last week's state poll.  Undoubtedly, Jordan-Elbridge will move up in the state polls.  J-E also found themselves 18 points ahead of section III rival Tully, the same squad that defeated the Eagles by 29 points last Saturday at B'ville.  "A 47 point turn around in one week" exclaimed Coach Roman, this is not unheard of but highly unlikely".  "We simply ran as if our hair were on fire".
This was by far the best performance in an invitational by the Eagles in 2008.  They narrowed their pack time to a season low 1:31, they defeated Tully, and they gained some important confidence and knowledge that if they put their best efforts into races, good things will happen.  "We simply have not hit on all cylinders yet in 2008 until today" added coach Roman.  "This shows how good we can be".
Cody Stanton took eleventh in the race and was able to out kick Tully's Ohure Sam, the same runner who out kicked Stanton for the B'ville victory last week.  Stanton broke the 16 minute barrier once again as he blazed the Genesee Valley Park 3.0 mile course in 15.57.  Mike Marrero, feeling strong once again, was next for J-E in 16.14, finishing in 18th place, one place ahead of Tully senior Nate Weber who was 19th.  "Weber was mumbling something about wait till next time or next race" said Marrero, "we seem to go back and forth, the two of us".  Sophomore Greg Bader ran with re-newed confidence which led him to a 16.39 clocking and a 35th place finish, a mere 25 seconds behind Marrero, the closest he's been to the J-E captain.  "I got out hard and didn't back off" said Bader, I finally am psyched about one of my races".  Tom Poppe was 65th in a personal best time of 17.15, followed by precocious freshman Steve Slonsky was was 75th in 17.28.  Kyle Becker was 106th (18.23) and George Brauchle was 141st (20.27).
Junior Varsity Shines
Led by five runners who finished in the top 29 in the race, the J-E junior varsity continues to throw up fantastic scores.  The Eagles were 4th overall and they only trailed three Pennsylvania squads.  The 86 points put up by the junior varsity squad was 26 points away from a McQuaid title which would have been a first for Jordan-Elbridge.  Five J-E runners finished in the top 29 of the race, led by a trio who finished within a single second.  Sophomore Carlin Coomey outkicked teammate Derrick Cheney to take 14th place in a personal best time of 17.59.  Cheney was 15th in the same time, followed by John Fl;ynn who was only one second back for 16th place.  Scott Sullivan was 22nd in 18.15 and Tom Badman rounded out the scoring by finishing 29th in 18.33.  "What another great performance" gushed J-E Coach Roman, "this squad keeps getting better and better".  Brendan Hogan, Rob Patterson, and Jesse Dexter rounded out the lineup and finished 119th, 165th and 249th respectively.
Eagles Claw Liverpool!
Liverpool, New YorkSaturday at Long Branch Park was a picturesque fall day.  The weather was distinctly crisp
and the smell of fall was in the air.  Jordan-Elbridge took the plunge of the temperature as an elixir that added
horsepower to their engines.  The Eagles ran smartly and fiercely and they came home as champions.  J-E won
the small school division with a low score of 53 points.  Once feared Sauquoit Valley was second with 98 points,
followed by Lafayette, Ilion, and Cato-Meridian.  Honeoye Falls-Lima was the overall winner with an incredible
score of 17 points, followed by McQuaid with 35,  Liverpool with 87, and Fairport with 100.  “HF-L has a legitimate
shot at states” said J-E Coach Roman, “they deserve their N.Y. State #2 Class B ranking”.  “I liked how we
almost knocked off the state’s 9th ranked class A school (McQuaid)”.  “They got us by only 18 points”.
HF-L’s Alex Deir was the race winner, running away from the field and winning by 28 seconds.  Deir was
the 2007 state Class B champion who outkicked Marcellus standout Chris Stogsdill for the championship.
For J-E, Cody Stanton was third overall in 16 minutes and forty-three seconds.  Cody was followed by Mike Marrero who was fourth
in 17 minutes and seven seconds.  Greg Bader was 11th in 17.47.  The Liverpool Invitational requires that each team be
split into two teams that race in separate varsity races.  In the second varsity race, freshman Steve Slonosky was 8th in
18.19, Tom Poppe was 12th in 18.28, and Kyle Becker was 15th in 18.46.  Becker, J-E’s sixth man, counted in the overall J-E score
as Liverpool scores six runners rather than the normal five.  Carlin Coomey was 22nd in 19.20.

Manhattan College Invitational - Sat., Oct. 11, 2008

Eagles Primed For League Title

Bronx, New York - Fresh off a 14th place finish in the Boys Varsity "E" race at the Manhattan Invitational, the

J-E Eagles are primed and ready to take their first league title since 2004.  Jordan-Elbridge raced head-to-head

with Marcellus H.S., one of the two teams it must defeat if it is to take the Liberty Division league title in Wednesday's

title race.  Although Marcellus took 12th in the same race as the Eagles, if the meet was scored as a dual meet the

score would favor J-E.  The other team that both Marcellus and J-E get to encounter is local power Westhill.

Likewise, there would be a J-E victory over Westhill if the meet were run on Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday.

The match up with Marcellus and Westhill should prove to be a highly competitive and dramatic league championship

match up as the league has seen in quite some time.

J-E finished 14th overall with in the race with 345 points.  LaSalle Academy of Rhode Island was the race winner with

141 points.  League opponent Marcellus was 12th with 295 points.  There were 35 competing teams in the Eagles' race.

On the day, there were over 12,000 runners who competed.

Cody Stanton was J-E's first man, blitzing around the 2.5 mile series of hills found on the most storied of all cross

country courses in 13 minutes and 24 seconds.  Stanton was 22nd overall in the race, a mere ten places ahead of junior

teammate Mike Marrero who was 32nd in 13.36.   Both Stanton's and Marrero's times are good enough to place them

in the top ten all time for Jordan-Elbridge at Van Cortlandt.  Stanton ran the 5th fastest time ever.  Greg Bader was

60th place overall in 14.06, followed by Tom Poppe in 103rd place/14.47, and Kyle Becker rounded out the scoring in

128th place (15.12).  Carlin Coomey was J-E's sixth man and finished in 154th place in 15 minutes and 49 seconds.

Stanton, Marrero, and Bader were awarded with Manhattan College Invitational Medals for their top 75 finishes.

J-E's Junior Varsity squad fared slightly better than their varsity teammates by finishing in 13th place out of 38

complete schools.  Sophomore Scott Sullivan was the team's first runner.  Sullivan finished in 52nd place (15.16),

only six seconds ahead of teammate John Flynn who was finished in 60th place (15.22).  Freshman Mitch Alpha was

63rd in 15 minutes and 26 seconds.  The race featured a spectacular forward roll by Alpha when he tripped over a

erosion beam during the race.  "I did a face plant and he did a forward roll" said Alpha, "I didn't lose a place".

Senior John Flynn witnessed Alpha's acrobatics and was "amazed" by Alpha's trick.  Tom Badman was J-E's 4th man

in 81st place (15.41).  Badman was openly disappointed for not earning a Manhattan Medal as the first three JV

runners had.  Badman was only six places from winning the sacred award.  Sophomore Derrick Cheney was J-E's

final scorer in 111th place (16.06).  All five runners were running the Van Cortlandt Park course for the first time.

The day featured a second JV squad for J-E, but one that was incomplete in the scoring.  Dylan Kirk, sporting a new

mohawk hair style, was J-E's first man finishing in 171st place (16.40).  Right behind Kirk were seniors George

Brauchle in 179th place (16.51), and Brendan Hogan (179th place/17.00).  Freshman Robbie Patterson was 185th in

17.08.

The league title race is a home meet for the Eagles which is sure to add to J-E's prospects of winning.

"It all comes down to pride and desire" said J-E Coach Roman, "whichever team wants to win the most probably will".

"All three squads are evenly matched".

Marathon Meet For Eagles
Marathon, New York - The J-E Eagles traveled to the south once again in pursuit of a challenging race and
they clearly got what they were seeking after competing in the Marathon Invitational on Saturday. The race
was deemed as tough as a state meet by their coach. Despite the tough field, J-E was able to snag a top-10
finish and some great prep for the upcoming championship meets. There were numerous state ranked teams
that were racing in the 'seeded' varsity race, including West Genesee (124 points), the race winner and the
16th ranked N.Y.S. AA class team. Newark Valley, the number one ranked Class C team, was second in
the race with 127 points, followed by Windsor (130) who is 6th in Class B, Holland Patent (160) - 6th
ranked in Class C, Marcellus (181) who is 8th in N.Y.S. class B, CNS (188) who is a 'bubble team' in
N.Y.S. class AA, Corning (204), and then the Eagles (204). Right behind J-E was Maine-Endwell (214)
who is the 20th ranked class A N.Y.S. squad.
J-E was paced by Cody Stanton and Mike Marrero who were 10th and 15th places respectively.
Stanton ran the hilly 5 K Marathon course in 16 minutes and 48 seconds. Marrero was back 22 seconds
in 17.10. Stanton got a bit of redemption by outracing Marcellus rival Jesse Garn who was four seconds
behind Stanton in 11th place. Garn had just beaten Stanton in the league championship race won by
Marcellus three days earlier. Greg Bader was J-E's next runner placing 37th in 17.47. "I was glad that
I outkicked Newark Valley's Devon Crispell". Steve Slonosky was J-E's 4th man finishing in 72nd place
(18.18). "I loved this course" rejoyced Slonosky, "the more hills the better". Teammate Tom Poppe was
feeling the exact opposite as he was overheard saying: "I just can't seem to run hills". "Today, I got winded
and I just jogged". Poppe was 83rd in 18.34. Mitch Alpha was J-E's 6th man (19.06) finishing in 106th
place and Kyle Becker was the last varsity runner in 122nd place (19.22).
JV Squad Wins Another Team Award
Paced by senior John Flynn's 10th place finish, the J-E junior varsity cross country squad won its third team
award of the season. The Eagles took 3rd place in the very competitive JV boys race, behind only West
Genesee (21) and Ithaca (107). J-E scored only 126 points and was the smallest school in the race.
Behind Flynn were a quartet of Eagles who finished within 12 places led by sophomore Tom Badman
(28th/19.55), Scott Sullivan (34tn/20.01), Carlin Coomey (37th/20.02), and Derrick Cheney (40th/20.04).
Brendan Hogan was 90th (21.14), Dylan Kirk was 96th (21.22), George Brauchle was 104th (21.25),
Robbie Patterson was 119th (21.47), and Jesse Dexter was 144th (22.44).
It is becoming more apparent that J-E's sectional crown will go through Holland Patent as the team
from northern New York once again beat the Eagles. Holland Patent defeated J-E by 44 points, but only
12 seconds when each team's top five times are combined. "We are ahead of H.P. through three, and we
need to put some pressure on them with our 4-5 runners". "I like our chances" said J-E Coach Roman.

Eagles Seek Section III Crown

Halloween Race To Decide State Birth

The long anticipated Section III race is upon us.  The Eagles from J-E are one of four teams favored to win the race and

move on to state competition.  The other squads so very closely matched are Tully H.S., Canastota H.S. and favorite

Holland Patent H.S.  Holland Patent is currently ranked 2nd in the latest N.Y. State Coaches Poll, with Tully ranked

3rd, J-E 4th, and Canastota in 8th.  Holland Patent does not have a front runner in the caliber of runner that the other

three schools have, but they have a very tightly bunched pack that makes them deadly to compete against.
