Central Square Invitational, Sat., Sept. 8, 2007.
The J-E Eagles shook off their summer rust and nearly won the Central Square Invite. The Eagles finished a strong 3rd behind perennial powers CNS and Baldwinsville. The Eagles tallied 76 points, just behind CNS <63> (CNS was projected as the 16th best team in NY State!) and B’ville’s 68. Mike Marerro and Jeff Donohue paced the squad by finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. This was easily the best finish by a J-E duo in an invitational since 2004. Marerro broke 18 minutes for the first time (17.58) with Donohue a stride behind (17.59). A untimely wrong turn by the race leaders left teammates Cody Stanton and Donato Direnzo in 17th and 21st places (18.57 and 19.13), certainly way below where they would have finished. Freshman Tom Poppe was the 5th scorer, in 33rd place (19.58). Jake Griffin (40th/20.51) and George Brauchle (48th/21.23) rounded out the squad. The conditions at race time were brutal with very high humidity and temperatures.
