2011 Biographical Sketches
Read all about the 2011 J-E Eagle Harriers.
Jack Gugel - Sophomore. It's hard to believe that Gugel is only a sophomore as he enters in to his third year of varsity cross country. A seasoned veteran who has already run in 20 varsity races - Gugel looks to be one of J-E's leaders this season, and there's no reason to believe he won't. Jack was tied with Stephen Slonosky as the team's # 2 scorer in 2010, and he competed in his second-straight Sectional Championship, finishing as the race's fastest freshman. Gugel finished 19th in the Sectional Finals in 2010 in 18:31. Gugel broke 17 minutes in his first race in 2010 at Chittenango (16.41) and was one of the fastest freshman in Section III and was ranked in the top 10 freshman harriers in the state. Jack placed 2nd at the Weedsport Invitational in October 2010 only behind teammate Greg Bader. As an indoor track runner, Gugel and three other teammates broke the J-E 4 by 800 record and went on to the State Qualifier Meet. In outdoor track, Gugel ran 4.47 in the mile and 10.23 in the 2 mile - good enough to set the J-E freshman record in the event which sent him to the 'State Q' meet. Gugel is hungry to lead the Eagles to a championship, and with his work ethic and desire, he just may get his wish.
Rob Patterson - Senior. A four-year varsity runner, Patterson looks to be a lock to be a part of the 'varsity 7' in 2011. Patterson has run in the last two Sectional Championships, placig 60th last season as a junior. Rob's best two races in 2010 cross country were when he finished 3rd in both the Baldwinsville JV race and the McQuaid JV race (18.45 and 18.06). Patterson has run 2.20 over 800 meters and has the wheels to really move. Rob's p.r. in the mile is 5.35. With Rob's experience, it will be hard for him not to have a great cross country season, providing his body doesn't break down as has happened in year's past.
Jared Bard - Junior. Bard is entering into his third year of varsity cross country, and his fifth year of running cross country overall. 'Bardy' as his teammates like to call him has been plagued by knee pain for the last year or so as his frame continues to grow at an alarming rate. The six foot two inch Bard has the stride to make some dramatic moves in 2011. Jared ran in the Sectional Finals as a freshman, but missed out as a sophomore. Bard had two top-10 finishes as a sophomore, finishing 10th at both the Bville Invite and the Weedsport Invitational. Bard is an outstanding basketball and baseball player, leading the J-E JV basketball squad in scoring and rebounding last season. As a baseball player, Bard creates a huge target for his infield mates to throw at since he is a first baseman. There is no reason why Jared won't be one of the Eagle elite '7' this season.
Nathan Hollis - Freshman. Hollis enters into his first season of varsity cross country after two stellar seasons on the modified cross country squad. Nathan finished three times in the top ten of invitationals in 2010, a feat that usually translates into eventual stardom on the varsity. It may take Hollis a little time to get accustomed to the 3 mile distance since modified races are half that distance. In early season workouts, Nathan has consistently been in the top ten on the squad. Nathan is an outstanding basketball and lacrosse player who wears his number 15 jersey with pride. Don't be surprised if you read about this precocious young man cracking the scoring column in 2011.
Nick Parkolap - Sophomore. Parkolap is entering into his 2nd year of varsity cross country, running in 11 races in 2010 as a freshman. Nick's best two races in 2010 were when he finished 28th in the Bville Invitational JV race and 18th at the Weedsport Invite JV race. Parkolap ran both indoor and outdoor track as a freshman and looks much stronger so far in 2011. It is not inconceivable to see Parkolap as a JV scorer in 2011.
Mitch Alpha - Senior Co-Captain. Alpha returns back to competitive cross country after a junior season plagued by slow recovery from knee surgery. Mitch had his knee operated last July and never fully recovered to complete any races in 2010. Fortunately for the wrestling team, Alpha got his body back together enough to compete. Alpha went on to dominate on the wrestling mats by compiling a 30 and 1 record at112 pounds, winning the League and Class titles and only losing 1 to 0 in the Sectional finals. Alpha is also a two-time Liberty Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler. Once wrestling ended, Alpha spent the spring rehabbing his knee after a second surgery. Once he got his doctor's clearance to train this summer, it's been full steam ahead for the hungry senior. Alpha is making a bid to be the Eagles number two runner in early workouts. Do not be surprised to see Alpha running along side fellow senior Stephen Slonosky, helping the Eagles to move up in the state rankings. As a sophomore, Alpha was the cross country team's sixth-best scorer, and was the team's fifth man in Sectionals. If J-E is to go very far this season, a healthy Alpha is definitely a must factor.
Dylan Whittico - Sophomore. A second-year varsity runner, Whittico returns for his sophomore year as one of the most improved J-E harriers. Whittico ran in the Section III Championships in cross country as a freshman placing 70th (20.49). Dylan's personal record for 5 K is 18.56 set at the Weedsport Invitational in 2010. A workaholic by nature, Whittico ran indoor and outdoor track as a freshman setting personal records in the mile at 5.09, the 800 at 2.21, and the indoor track freshman record of 7.42 in the 55 meter dash. Whittico gave up lacrosse and wrestling to devote time to his developing running career and he looks poised to crack the top five this season, an unheard of jump from outside the top 10 as a freshman.
Ben Cheney - Senior. Cheney enters into his 2nd year of varsity cross country in 2011 and was the team's 10th leading scorer in 2010. Cheney missed four races in 2010 due to illness or freak injury or he would have been ranked higher on the scoring tablets. Ben won the Baldwinsville JV race in 2010, a thrill to both himself, his coach, and his parents, completing the 3 mile course in 18.27. Some of Ben's best races last year were when he could battle his big brother Derrick for position and family honors. Now that Derrick has graduated, Ben can focus on defeating his opponents. Cheney played varsity basketball as a junior and was a parttime starter on the varsity lacrosse field in 2010. With a great summer of training, lifting, and running, Cheney has an insider's path to becoming one of the top 5 scorers on the team as a senior.
Alex Suslik - Senior. Suslik enters into his 2nd year of varsity cross country after a success debut season as a junior. Alex was one of J-E's top scorers in 2010, scoring 43 points - good enough for 7th place on the team. Suslik's best race of the season was in the Sectional Finals where he was the team's number four man, finishing in 34th place (19.04). Although Suslik did not participate in any other sports following last year's cross country season, he is being looked at to help out with the scoring. Alex will definitely be an asset to the Eagles if he can duplicate his performance from last year, and if early season workouts are an indication, he'll be cracking the top five before long.
Jacob Patterson - Sophomore. Patterson is entering into his second year of varsity cross country with high expectations. As a freshman, he rarely scored on the JV squad, but this year looks different. A leaner, meaner Patterson points to a more explosive runner who will definitely help the JV squad win some meets. Patterson was tied for 12th in team scoring in 2010. His rivaly with Bville runner Ryan Roman is legendary, and they hope to continue battling each other again in 2011. 'J.P.' as his teammates call him, is the younger brother of Rob, and the more flamboyant of the two.
Christian Marrero - Junior. A first year runner, Christian enters his rookie season of cross country after two successful seasons on the soccer team. A convert to cross country is the soccer team's loss and the cross country team's gain for sure. Marrero's brother Mike is a J-E Cross Country Hall of Fame member, so there are high expectations on Christian once he gets his running legs under him. For now, he'll be able to develop at his own pace, but excellence is bred into the fiber of all the Marreros, so it won't be long before Christian starts to move up on the squad. Marrero is also a stand out baseball player leading the JV team in hits and batting average, among other categories.
