September 21, 2010 Edition - No. 4
The Eagle HarrierTRIFECTA!Gugel, Bader, Slonosky tie for 1stSkaneateles, N.Y. - The race didn't go as planned, not even close. The state-ranked Jordan-Elbridge Eagles were supposed to have an easy time with both Skaneateles and Hannibal at the Skaneateles Polo Grounds. The race was far from easy, and if it weren't for the trio of J-E runners who took the top three positions in the race, J-E may have lost to upstart Hannibal. J-E defeated Hannibal 25-30 and Skaneateles by the score of 16 - 45.
Senior Greg Bader, junior Steve Slonosky, and freshman Jack Gugel overcame an early lead by Hannibal pace-setter Ben Griffin, and led the Eagles to a hard-fought victory. All three were clocked at 17.18, with Slonosky getting the first place finish card by the decree of captain Bader. "I was getting a little nervous at a mile and a half when Hannibal had four guys right behind us and one guy ahead of us" said Gugel. "No one from our squad was even close". Despite Hannibal taking places four through eight, J-E would be the winner. "I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined that Hannibal would have dominated this part of the race and not have even a single J-E runner breaking up the pack of five" said J-E coach Roman, "they simply ran well and my guys didn't have their best races".
Tom Poppe, senior co-captain, was ninth and fellow senior Scott Sullivan was 11th to round out J-E's scoring. Poppe forgot his inhaler at home so his asthma plagued him and Sullivan had severely sore calves. "My calves are so sore I can hardly walk" said Sullivan. Carlin Coomey continued to make a dramatic rehabilitation from his August surgery and was J-E's sixth man (18.44). "I am learning how to breathe again" said a jubilant Coomey, "I can get air up through my nose for the first time". Junior Rob Patterson out sprinted senior teammate Derrick Cheney for the 7th spot (18.50).
The NYS 3rd-ranked J-E runs Saturday at the B'ville Invitational and sits in first place in the Liberty Division with a 2 - 0 record.
