The Eagle Harrier

Eagles McGrounded

McQuaid Tough on J-E

Rochester, N.Y.Fifteen state ranked teams were entered into the Seeded ‘A’ race at the 46th
McQuaid Invitational, and the J-E Eagles held up well to the competition.  J-E finished 7th out
of 24 teams, defeating at least 8 state ranked teams.  Pennsylvania power Northeast Bradford
won the race with the low score of 93 points.  Number one state ranked Class D power Geneseo
was 2nd with 114 points, followed by #2 ranked class C power Holland Patent (136), North East,
PA was 4th (173), 6th ranked class C Pawling was 5th (190), 9th ranked class C Wayland-
 Cohocton was 6th (239), 3rd ranked class C power J-E was 7th (255), 3rd ranked class D Barker
was 8th (261), 14th ranked class B Windsor was 9th (267) and 8th ranked class C Fredonia was
10th (281).  The caliber of this race was nothing less than a state meet and should help to
propel the Eagles into the championship round of races in a month.
Senior Greg Bader was J-E’s first man finishing 19th in 16.03.  “This course
is tough” said an exhausted Bader, “you’ve got to concentrate the whole way or
you’ll just disappear and run a bad time”.  Bader was disappointed that
he didn’t break the 16 minute barrier and that league opponent Brendan Smith
from CBA H.S. was within sight.  Smith
was 11th in 15.48.  Despite being disappointed with his race, Bader was 32 seconds
faster this year than last.
Junior Steve Slonosky was J-E’s second man finishing ahead of teammate
Jack
Gugel for the first time this season.
Slonosky was 33rd in a personal record time of 16.19.  Gugel was six places back
in 39th place (16.27).  “Jack and I went back and forth for quite a few times in
the race”, “Jack threw in some good surges” said Slonosky in his usual modest
self.  “I felt weak and am not happy with my race said Gugel, “I wasn’t myself”.
Gugel ran with a sinus infection.  Slonosky was 44 seconds faster this year
and Gugel was one minute and 33 seconds faster.  Gugel was the 6th fastest
freshman on the entire day.
J-E’s 4th man was senior Tom Poppe who returned to racing after missing
Wednesday’s dual meet because of illness.  Poppe was 105th (17.39) one place
ahead of senior teammate Scott Sullivan (106th/17.40).   Carlin Coomey was just
behind
his senior teammates by finishing in 121st place (17.51).  “I was glad that I
broke 18 minutes” said Coomey, but I wanted
to be up with Tom and Scott”.  “I am satisfied with my race”.  Poppe was only
one second ahead of his 2009 time.  Sullivan didn’t run cross country in 2009,
and Coomey was one minute and 9 seconds faster.  Senior Derrick Cheney
was 151st (18.20) and said that his legs “just didn’t feel good”.  J-E must
find a way to get this quartet of seniors to be
more competitive as the gap between its third and fourth man is over a minute.
“If we are going to be a championship caliber team, we’re going to have ride
these seniors, and these seniors are going to have to step up soon” said J-E
Coach Roman.
Jordan-Elbridge’s Junior Varsity squad was once again the better competitor
as they took third place out of over 27.
Junior Rob Patterson equaled last Saturday’s performance by finishing third.
“I was really proud of Robbie by blowing by four competitors in the last 300
meters of the race” said Roman, “finishing third at McQuaid is some feat”.
Fellow junior Ben Cheney was also a top ten finisher by finishing in eighth
place.  Here are the JV Team’s Places and Times:
