The Eagle Harrier
Ho Hum Efforts Plague Eagles
Frosh Marrero & Stanton Top Seniors
Baldwinsville, N.Y. – The Jordan-Elbridge Boys Cross Country Team entered Saturday’s Baldwinsville Invite and had every reason to expect to do well. They had fallen to two league foes on Wednesday, but had given tremendous effort in the losses. Thursday’s hill workout left the Eagles tired and sore, but their morale and motivation were at a high state. To top off the positive karma leading to Saturday’s contest was the fact that it was homecoming weekend and the pep rally on Friday and subsequent football game Friday night should have got the harriers’ blood pumping. "Too bad we didn’t race on Friday" said J-E Coach Roman, "we looked a wee bit tired on Saturday morning and our race performances showed it". The Eagles took 13th place with a total score of 364 points. There were 27 complete teams in the race, so the Eagles finished exactly in the middle of the field. Ho hum. The race was won once again by Tully H.S. with 65 points.

The race was won once again by Tully H.S. with 65 points. The Boys Varsity Small School race began with a formidable group of 27 complete squads on the starting line. There were some of the best teams in the state and from central New York represented in the race. Tully H.S. is ranked # 2 in N.Y. State Class C, Windsor and Holland Patent H.S.’s are ranked #’s 10 and 13th in N.Y. State Class B as well. J-E is unranked at the present time, and may not crack the rankings this season without some wins against some more highly touted schools. When the race began, J-E inexplicably, jogged. "We went for the back of the pack said J-E’s Coach Roman, "even the parents noticed it". By the time the runners entered the trails in the wooden portion of the course (About 5/8’s of a mile into the race), it was clear that J-E would score poorly. "I told the guys to not kill themselves in the beginning of the race" said Roman, but to go straight to the back of the field is not what I had wanted". By the time the J-E harriers decided to move up, there were simply too many runners to pass. "I think we collectively made some poor racing decisions and we may have been fatigued from Thursday’s workout and the football game and dance that was part of Homecoming Weekend". "I hope my guys had a good time there because I don’t think anyone had too much fun today, especially being around me" added Roman. Jeff Donohue led the varsity to a 39th place finish in a sub-18 minute time of 17.53. Donato Direnzo was 48th (18.04) and was the only other Eagle in the top 50 of the race. Jake Griffin and Shelby Brayton were 83rd and 84th places respectively in 18.49 and 18.50 over B’ville’s muddy, 3 mile course. Kyle Merrill was J-E’s fifth man finishing in 110th place (19.21). Seniors Kyle Bard and Andy Degray were 113th and 122nd places, finishing in 19.25 and 19.46. The Junior Varsity Squad fared much better than the varsity by finishing in sixth place. Freshman Mike Marrero and Cody Stanton, ran outstanding races, and beat many of their varsity teammates. Marrero was 9th overall and blazed the 3 mile course in 18.26, 3rd overall on the team. Marrero won a B’ville Invite tee shirt for his place. Stanton was 16th overall in a surprising time of 19.01, faster than three seniors on the varsity. "There is no reason why any JV level freshman should ever beat a varsity senior" said Coach Roman, "I’d be a bit embarrassed if I were one of these seniors". "Cody has been running decent as of late, but just last Wednesday he was our 13th man, you’d better ask the older kids he vaulted over to explain how he got to be fifth man on Saturday George Brauchle was the JV Squad’s # 3 man by finishing in 37th place (20.04). Matt Sullivan and Kyle Becker rounded out the JV scoring by finishing 66th and 74th places respectively (21.15 & 21.26). Dylan Kirk and Brendan Hogan also finished 105th and 111th (23.43 & 24.40). The Eagles host both Skaneateles and Hannibal in their lone home meet of the season on Wednesday starting at 4:00 pm.
